CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY

From Healthcare Concept to Real Product, Customers, and Growth

SilverStay had identified an important healthcare problem, but as a company without a traditional software development background, the team needed more than developers. They needed a technology partner who could help shape the product, fill in the gaps, and turn the vision into working software.

Technology Rivers helped SilverStay move from concept to a real product and business, beginning a technology relationship that would continue across multiple major development efforts.

“Technology Rivers has allowed us to bring our company into something real and tangible.”

Why Patrick Values Working with Technology Rivers

Guidance When the Destination Is Clear, but the Product Isn't

SilverStay understood the healthcare problem it wanted to solve, but the team did not begin with every feature or technical decision mapped out. Patrick valued Technology Rivers’ ability to understand where SilverStay wanted to go and propose a practical way to build toward that destination.

An Extension of the SilverStay Team

Patrick did not describe Technology Rivers as an outside vendor executing tickets. He described having a team that felt almost embedded inside SilverStay, combining efficient development with responsiveness and a strong understanding of the business.

A Partner for Non-Technical Founders

Patrick openly describes coming from a non-technical background without much software development experience. For him, one of Technology Rivers’ strongest qualities was the ability to walk SilverStay through the development process rather than expecting the founders to already know how software should be designed and built.

Value Beyond Software Development

The relationship extended beyond product development. Patrick credits Technology Rivers with making introductions to venture capital contacts and connecting SilverStay with other entrepreneurs who could share experience and advice as the company grew.

"I feel like we have this team that is almost embedded in our company like they're our own people, and it's just a phenomenal value."

FROM IDEA TO PRODUCT

SilverStay Knew the Healthcare Problem. It Needed a Team to Help Build the Solution.

SilverStay builds assisted living networks for health systems. Patrick describes the company’s mission as helping health systems transition patients, often people with clinically complex needs and limited financial resources, into assisted living communities with availability when returning home is no longer safe.

The business problem was clear.

The software product was not.

SilverStay’s founders did not come from software development backgrounds, and they did not begin the engagement knowing every feature they would ultimately need. Technology Rivers helped bridge that gap by understanding where SilverStay was trying to go and helping determine what the product should actually look like.

In the early SilverStay engagement, Technology Rivers helped build a solution for finding available assisted living options and requesting quotes. The work also included a HIPAA-compliant mobile application for assisted living staff to respond to inquiries and a hospital portal supporting patient-information exchange as patients moved between hospitals and assisted living communities.

Rather than requiring SilverStay to arrive with a fully defined technical specification, Technology Rivers helped translate the business and healthcare workflow into a functioning product.

BUILDING WITH A NON-TECHNICAL FOUNDER

You Don't Need to Know How to Build Software to Know the Problem Worth Solving

Patrick’s perspective is especially relevant for healthcare founders who deeply understand their market but do not have software engineering backgrounds.

SilverStay knew the users, the healthcare environment, and the problem it wanted to solve. What the company needed was a team capable of turning that knowledge into a software product.

Technology Rivers helped walk Patrick and his team through that process.

Instead of expecting SilverStay to dictate architecture, features, and implementation details, the Technology Rivers team helped interpret the business vision, identify missing product requirements, and recommend how to make the solution work.

Years later, Patrick would describe the same dynamic when reflecting on SilverStay’s broader relationship with Technology Rivers: SilverStay brought deep healthcare knowledge, while Technology Rivers became a trusted technical resource for translating that knowledge into software.

MORE THAN EXECUTING A FEATURE LIST

Helping Define the Product Before Building It

Patrick highlights flexibility as one of the things that made the engagement work.

Technology Rivers could start with the destination SilverStay was trying to reach and then help determine the path to get there.

That distinction mattered because SilverStay did not have every requirement defined at the beginning.

The Technology Rivers team contributed not only development capacity but product thinking, helping SilverStay understand what the product could look like and filling gaps the founding team had not yet identified.

For an early-stage healthcare company, that meant development could move forward without requiring the founders to become software experts first.

HEALTHCARE SOFTWARE BUILT AROUND REAL CARE TRANSITIONS

Connecting Hospitals, Caregivers, and Assisted Living Communities

SilverStay’s product existed within a complex real-world healthcare workflow.

The initial engagement included functionality supporting caregivers searching for assisted living availability, requesting quotes, assisted living staff responding through a mobile application, and hospitals exchanging patient information as patients transitioned between care settings.

That required Technology Rivers to understand more than screens and features. The software needed to support the way different participants interacted throughout the care-transition process.

The mobile component was built around HIPAA-compliant workflows, reflecting the healthcare environment in which SilverStay operates.

THE UNEXPECTED VALUE PATRICK DIDN’T HIRE TECHNOLOGY RIVERS FOR

A Technology Relationship That Extended Into the Startup Ecosystem

Some of the value Patrick remembers most clearly had little to do with writing code.

Technology Rivers’ network gave SilverStay access to people who could help the company beyond product development.

Patrick specifically credits Technology Rivers with introductions to venture capital contacts that helped SilverStay as it built its first funding round. Technology Rivers also introduced SilverStay to other startup entrepreneurs who could share their experience and help Patrick navigate the journey.

That support was not part of the software specification.

It came from treating SilverStay’s success as bigger than the development engagement itself.

Years later, that pattern continued. As SilverStay’s technical needs evolved, Ghazenfer also connected Patrick with a technical leader who ultimately became SilverStay’s fractional CTO.

"The differentiator in Technology Rivers relative to their competitors is the tremendous amount of value, great efficient development, and a team that's embedded with us and extremely responsive."

FROM CONCEPT TO A REAL BUSINESS

12–18 Months Earlier, SilverStay Had a Concept

Patrick’s strongest description of the impact is also one of the simplest.

When he looked back at where SilverStay had been 12 to 18 months earlier, he described the company as working on a concept.

By the time of this testimonial, SilverStay had:

A real software product

Real customers paying for that product

Venture capital funding

A technology team

Technology Rivers was one part of SilverStay’s broader startup journey, but Patrick directly credits the partnership with helping make the company “real and tangible.”

"We were working on a concept 12–18 months ago. Now we have a real product that has allowed us to get real customers who pay us and raise real money from venture capitalists."

WHAT STARTED HERE DIDN’T END HERE

One Early Healthcare Product Became a Long-Term Technology Relationship

This 2021 testimonial captures an early chapter in the relationship between SilverStay and Technology Rivers.

Years later, Patrick would describe SilverStay as having engaged Technology Rivers on three or four major development efforts over roughly eight years.

As SilverStay evolved, so did the technology.

1. Early SilverStay Product

Technology Rivers helped SilverStay translate its assisted living concept into working software supporting search, quotes, mobile workflows, and hospital-to-assisted-living care transitions.

View Project →

2. Post-Acute Care Provider Platform

Technology Rivers later helped SilverStay develop a centralized database of post-acute care providers with significant backend search capabilities.

Patrick describes sophisticated search functionality, including Elasticsearch, that helped SilverStay search provider data in a more natural way. This work occurred before the current wave of AI-driven product development.

3. Discharge Navigation System

Years later, SilverStay returned to Technology Rivers for another major initiative: a web application designed for frontline hospital case managers.

The newer product pulls information from electronic medical records, processes information using large language models, and presents it in a way intended to help case managers act on it efficiently.

The technologies and products changed.

The reason SilverStay kept returning was much more consistent: Technology Rivers had become a technical resource the company trusted to help turn healthcare expertise into working software.

THE BOTTOM LINE

"They Really Get It and Know How to Make It Happen."

Patrick’s 2021 experience with Technology Rivers was not simply about getting an application developed.

It was about finding a team that could understand where a non-technical healthcare founder wanted to go, help define what needed to be built, efficiently develop the product, respond as part of the internal team, and contribute value beyond the original software engagement.

Product Guidance

Helping turn business and healthcare knowledge into software requirements.

Technical Execution

Moving from an early concept to a functioning product.

Responsiveness

Operating as a team Patrick described as embedded within SilverStay.

Startup Understanding

Working effectively with founders who did not come from software development backgrounds.

Long-Term Partnership

Becoming a technical resource SilverStay would return to for multiple major development efforts as the company evolved.

"Every now and then you get a phenomenal experience where these guys rock and they really get it and know how to make it happen. You don't see it often, but when you do, it's fruitful."

The Full Conversation

[0:00] My name is Patrick Mish. I’m the CEO, co-founder of SilverStay. SilverStay builds assisted living networks for health systems, and we help health systems transition their oftentimes clinically complex and tend to be low-income patients into assisted living communities that have bed availability when home is no longer safe for those patients.

[0:16] So what was great about Technology Rivers is a number of things.

[0:22] So one, it was really flexibility around how to go about developing our custom solution and product.

[0:31] Technology Rivers was really able to say, “Hey, look, if you understand where you’re trying to go, here’s how we propose making this work.”

[0:37] The other piece is it’s a team that can really help you understand what product would look like.

[0:44] So we didn’t know every feature that we would want, that we needed, that we thought of, but the team was able to fill in some of those gaps for us.

[0:58] What’s really exceeded our expectations when working with Technology Rivers has been just the tremendous value that we’re getting.

[1:05] I feel like we have this team that is almost embedded in our company, almost like they’re our own when they’re not, and it’s just a really phenomenal value that we’re getting.

[1:20] So also, considering Technology Rivers, is that if you’re coming at this from a big sort of non-technical standpoint of perhaps maybe not having a tremendous amount of software development background, like myself and our company, then Technology Rivers is the perfect partner because they’re really able to be walking through this process.

[1:45] So what’s the differentiator in Technology Rivers relative to their competitors is just a tremendous amount of value.

[1:52] One, it’s just a really great, efficient development, and it’s been a team that’s embedded with us and working with us, extremely responsive.

[1:59] That’s sort of the base foundation, but then there are all these other things that came along with our relationship with Technology Rivers that were completely unexpected from our part.

[2:16] And so a couple of those are things like, “Hey, Technology Rivers has got this great network of venture capitalists that they work with,” and so some really great introductions were made there that allow us to help build out our first round of funding.

[2:31] And additionally, Technology Rivers is working with a bunch of other startups, early-stage companies, and so some really good networking was able to have introduction with other entrepreneurs that were just able to help us in this journey as we kind of figured this out.

[2:46] Fundamentally, Technology Rivers has allowed us to bring our company into something that is actually real and tangible.

[2:55] So we were working on a concept 12, 18 months ago. Now we have a real product, and that real product now has been able to allow us to get real customers who pay us real dollars and raise real money through the introduction of venture capitalists.

[3:12] Every now and then you get that just phenomenal experience where you’re like, “These guys rock, and they really get it, and they know how to make it happen.” You don’t see it often, but when you do, it’s fruitful.
