Why Bethany Values Working with Technology Rivers

A Conversation Before a Quote

From the first interaction, Bethany says Technology Rivers wanted to understand what Healing Track was trying to accomplish. Rather than immediately asking for finalized requirements and producing a quote, the conversation started with learning about the product, the team, and the problem they were trying to solve.

Comfortable with Experimentation

Healing Track did not know exactly what the digital version of the therapy should look like when the project began. Technology Rivers was willing to experiment alongside the team and adapt as the original idea evolved into something significantly different.

Technical Expertise in Plain English

Bethany appreciated the team’s ability to understand technical complexity while explaining it clearly to people who were not highly technical. She describes that combination of technical talent and customer-facing communication as something that is not always easy to find in a technology partner.

Healthcare Experience That Created Confidence

Healthcare experience was important to Healing Track. Bethany had seen Technology Rivers’ previous healthcare work and specifically points to the team’s experience and comfort with HIPAA as something that made her team feel safe.

"We wanted to work with somebody who would hear us and really be able to respond to our needs as we were doing this, and were open to experimenting with us as well."

THE PRODUCT CHALLENGE

Bringing a New Approach to Chronic Pain Treatment Into a Digital Experience

Healing Track grew out of the work of Alan Gordon, founder of the Pain Psychology Center and one of the leaders behind pain reprocessing therapy.

The Pain Psychology Center specializes in treating chronic pain. Its approach is informed by research showing that some forms of chronic pain can result from learned neural pathways in the brain and may be addressed using psychological techniques.

Healing Track set out to bring this approach beyond the traditional face-to-face setting.

The vision was to create a digital health product where people experiencing chronic pain could learn about the approach, access therapeutic content, work through self-paced programs, and participate in recorded or live video sessions with certified coaches.

But moving the therapy into software raised a more fundamental question:

Could You Digitize the Therapy Without Losing What Made It Work?

Bethany and the Healing Track team did not simply want to take existing material and put it inside an app.

They first had to determine whether the therapy was appropriate for digitization at all.

The approach had developed through face-to-face interactions, and the team wanted to preserve the qualities that made that experience meaningful as they explored a digital format.

As Healing Track’s Chief Scientific Officer, Bethany worked alongside Alan Gordon, other members of the Healing Track team, and Technology Rivers to explore that question while the product was being developed.

Technology Rivers entered the project not simply as a team implementing a finished specification, but as a development partner working alongside Healing Track as the digital experience took shape.

PRODUCT DISCOVERY & COLLABORATION

Starting Without Pretending Every Answer Was Already Known

Healing Track’s product was not completely defined when the team began looking for a development partner.

Bethany says several of the development companies they considered expected the product to already be thought through, designed, and supported by a tight roadmap.

That approach did not fit Healing Track.

The team was attempting to digitize the therapy for the first time. They needed the freedom to learn what worked and allow those discoveries to influence what they built.

Technology Rivers approached the conversation differently.

“Right from the beginning, they were wanting to have a conversation. They didn’t just want to give us a quote.”

Bethany says the team wanted to understand what Healing Track was doing and get to know the people behind the project.

For a product whose requirements were still emerging, that difference mattered.

“With Tech Rivers, they felt more like a partner and a conversation.”

AGILE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

When the Product Changed, the Development Process Changed With It

The Healing Track team learned as it built.

Bethany says the original plan and concept ultimately became very different from where the product landed.

With a rigid development relationship, that level of change could easily have created friction.

Instead, Technology Rivers continued adapting alongside the Healing Track team.

Bethany connects that flexibility directly to successful digital product development. Products evolve as teams learn from the technology, users, therapeutic experience, and the process of actually putting an idea into practice.

For Healing Track, iteration was not evidence that the original plan had failed. It was part of discovering what the product needed to become.

“If you want to be successful in any kind of a digital product space, agility and iteration are critical to your innovation and success.”

"Our initial plan and idea and concept ended up being very different than where we landed. At no point did Tech Rivers make us feel like they couldn't work with us."

DIGITAL HEALTH PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Turning the Healing Track Experience Into Software

The product needed to support more than educational content.

Healing Track was designed as a HIPAA-compliant mobile experience through which people dealing with chronic pain could learn about the approach, access resources, participate in self-paced experiences, and receive coaching.

Technology Rivers collaborated with Bethany and other members of the Healing Track team to turn that model into a working digital product.

The broader platform was designed around the different people participating in the experience, including those receiving treatment and coaching, as well as the people helping manage and deliver those services.

The challenge throughout development was to make technology support the therapeutic model rather than force the therapeutic model to fit a predetermined piece of software.

BUILT FOR HEALTHCARE

Healthcare Experience That Helped the Team Feel Safe

Healthcare experience was one of the factors Bethany considered when evaluating development partners.

Healing Track needed a team that understood the additional considerations involved in developing software around healthcare experiences and sensitive information.

Bethany had seen Technology Rivers’ previous healthcare work and specifically highlights its experience with HIPAA.

“We saw the work they had done with healthcare. They had a lot of really great comfort and experience with HIPAA, and so we felt very safe there.”

Healing Track was developed as a HIPAA-compliant application, and Technology Rivers’ existing healthcare experience gave Bethany confidence that the team understood the environment in which they were building.

For Healing Track, healthcare knowledge was not separate from product development. It was part of choosing a technology partner the team could trust while translating the therapy into software.

TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION

Bridging the Gap Between Domain Experts and Developers

Digital health products bring together people with very different areas of expertise.

Bethany works at the intersection of science, technology, and product development, while other stakeholders involved in a project may have deep expertise in therapy, healthcare, operations, or business without being highly technical.

That makes communication between the product team and engineering team especially important.

Bethany says her Technology Rivers contacts were particularly good at understanding technical issues while explaining them in plain English.

That allowed people across the Healing Track team to participate in product conversations without needing to become software engineers themselves.

“Sometimes with a tech partner, that’s not always easy, to get people who are so tech-savvy and so talented, who also are so good at the customer side.”

For Bethany, those communication skills were not separate from successful development. They were part of it.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The "Invisible Soft Skills" Behind Successful Product Development

Healing Track’s experience required more than writing code against a fixed specification.

Technology Rivers needed to understand what the team was trying to accomplish, communicate with people across technical and nontechnical roles, work within a healthcare environment, experiment with ideas, and remain flexible as the product evolved.

Bethany’s experience highlights four qualities in particular:

Approachability

A willingness to understand the people and problem before prescribing a solution.

Agility

The ability to continue moving forward even when the product changes significantly.

Communication

Technical expertise paired with an ability to make complex decisions understandable.

Healthcare Experience

Familiarity with the considerations involved in building digital health products.

“Tech Rivers really is exceptionally well suited for that, with all of the invisible soft skills that go along with tech development.”

“I definitely would encourage people to work with this group of folks because your psychological health will thank you.”

The Full Conversation

[0:00] I’m Dr. Bethany Raines, and I am an applied neuroscientist. I work with clients who want to apply more cutting-edge science into technology and products that are customer-facing and can make more of an impact in the real world.

[0:09] And I recently worked with Tech Rivers to put together an app for one of my clients that is working on a mind-body approach and a digital application for chronic pain treatment.

[0:24] What we’re doing with this project is applying a very successful and popular chronic pain therapy, pain reprocessing therapy.

[0:32] We’re taking that and trying to scale it out with the creator of that therapy and make it into a digital app that can be used by people to do self-guided healing, make it easier for them to get in touch with a therapist or a coach.

[0:47] So, it was a challenge in and of itself for us to determine whether or not the therapy was even appropriate for digitization.

[0:55] And we really wanted to make sure that by putting it in a digital format and getting it out there as an app that we weren’t going to lose the magic, we weren’t going to lose the effectiveness of this therapy that had been so amazing thus far, more in face-to-face environments.

[1:12] We wanted to work with somebody who would hear us and really be able to respond to our needs as we were doing this and were open to experimenting with us as well, because we didn’t know exactly what this was going to look like since it was our first approach at digitizing the therapy.

[1:19] And we talked to quite a lot of developer teams, and Tech Rivers really stood out to us because of their approachability.

[1:36] Right from the beginning, they were wanting to have a conversation. They didn’t just want to give us a quote. It was like, “Talk to us about what you’re doing. We want to get to know you. We want to see what you’re doing.”

[1:44] They were very transparent about their processes. And a lot of the other groups we were looking at really needed something to be already thought through, already designed.

[1:52] They needed a very tight road map. They weren’t super flexible.

[2:00] And with Tech Rivers, they felt more like a partner and a conversation.

[2:04] So, we really loved that. It was obvious to us this was great value, but also kind of what felt like a boutique hands-on service. And we saw the work they had done with healthcare.

[2:15] They had a lot of really great comfort and experience with HIPAA, and so we felt very safe there and knew that they weren’t going to cut corners or put us in any kind of risk as we were putting the project together.

[2:22] All of our contacts on the team from Tech Rivers were really good at understanding things and putting things into plain English for everybody.

[2:37] That wasn’t hyper technical.

[2:40] Sometimes with a tech partner, that’s not always easy to get people who are so tech-savvy and so talented who also are so good at the customer side.

[2:50] So, I liked that a lot. Our initial plan and idea and concept ended up being very different than where we landed. And at no point did Tech Rivers make us feel like they couldn’t work with us.

[2:58] If you want to be successful in any kind of a digital product space, obviously agility and iteration are critical to your innovation and success, and Tech Rivers really is exceptionally well suited for that.

[3:12] Just with all of the sort of the invisible soft skills that go along with tech development. And so I definitely would encourage people to work with this group of folks because your psychological health will thank you. Ha!
